Lieutenant General Ashok Bhim Shivane, is a second-generation army officer, with four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army. He belongs to a family of warriors with his father Late Lt Col B V Shivane, AV ̑SM who was a Freedom Fighter and later a World War 2 veteran who fought all wars after independence till 1971.

Lieutenant General Ashok Bhim Shivane, is a second-generation army officer, with four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army. He belongs to a family of warriors with his father Late Lt Col B V Shivane, AV ̑SM who was a Freedom Fighter and later a World War 2 veteran who fought all wars after independence till 1971.
His brother 2Lt D B Shivane made the supreme sacrifice for the nation on the Chinese border at the age of 20, and his name is inscribed in the National War Memorial. His wife is a second-generation army officer’s daughter, and his sister too is married to an army veteran. The entire family has defence forces representation over the generations.
Lieutenant General Ashok Bhim Shivane, is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune and joined the Indian Army in Dec 1978. A scholar warrior with 39 years of an outstanding career in the Indian Army, he has excelled in all spheres. During his service tenure, the General Officer has done M Sc, double M Phil and PGDCM all with First Class / Distinction, Independent Director Course, besides several military coveted courses.
During his career span, he has represented India at the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Guatemala, was in charge of anti-terrorist operations in J&K from 1997 to 1999, was in charge of Perspective Planning, Future Restructuring and Space Capability building of the Indian Army as ADG PP and finally the coveted appointment of Director General Mechanised Forces. He commanded the coveted operationally employed offensive formation of the Indian Army – the elite Strike Corps from 2104 to 2015. He was awarded by the President of India, PVSM (2017), AVSM (2016), & VSM (2009) besides Chief of Army Staff Commendation and two Army Commander Commendations, for distinguished service of the highest order.
Subsequently, he was bestowed the rare honour of being nominated Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the President of India in July 2017 in recognition of his distinguished services. His contribution to policy formulation and conception of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Defence Modernisation has been acclaimed during his tenure as DGMF and subsequently as Consultant MoD post-retirement. He has been a regular invitee as a Distinguished speaker to Defence Institutions, colleges, and corporates for over a decade.
The General is renowned nationally and internationally in leadership, motivation talks, geostrategy, geopolitics, national security, terrorism, military capability building, military technology, and Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence and international relations. He has chaired and been a keynote speaker at several international and national seminars.
He is an acclaimed defence analyst who has about 150 publications to his credit including four books on future warfare, professional military education and leadership and a research paper on Defence Modernisation and Technology Induction Strategy with a focus on Atmanirbharta in Defence, released by the Rajya Raksha Mantri.
He has been an active participant as a Keynote Speaker and Special Address Speaker on various webinars and other forums on the digital platform. He has been at the forefront of suggesting policy reforms and long-term restructuring strategy for the Defence Forces and chaired several seminal studies for the Indian Army.
COVID Warrior
The General is a volunteer COVID warrior and has actively participated in motivational talks, policy construct and writings. During the second wave, the officer donned the hat of an active front-line Covid warrior. Besides several policy recommendations to the Govt, he has given a large number of motivational talks to international audiences including Model UN on combating COVID-19 body, mind and soul.
In 2021 with the onset of the second wave he has dedicated his energy to providing succour and relief for Covid affected people. He is presently a volunteer COVID help warrior with a pan India organization NGO KRANTII. He has been recognised by several national and International organizations as a COVID WARRIOR FOR HUMANITY.
Post Retirement Accolades
The General Officer is presently a Senior Defence Advisor / Member Board of Governors to several National and International Think Tanks and Defence Magazines, besides Global Legal Innovation Advisory, Drive Safe India, Environment NGO, Care of Special and underprivileged children and the Hospitality Industry. He is an environmentalist and climate change activist.
He is also a board member of the International Human Rights Advisory Council. He has recently been appointed Vice Chairman India of the National Council of News and Broadcasting by the International Media Advisory Council and also the Senior Advisor Board Member and Executive Director to UNAccc. He is also the Chief Security Advisor to the Economic Council of India. In Mar 2024 he was appointed Strategic Advisor to the Chairman Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI).
General Shivane was a Consultant to the Ministry of Defence (Ordnance Factory Board) from 2018 to 2020. He is presently the Distinguish Fellow at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies. The officer has authored two books and co-authored another two books. His latest research book ‘Professional Military Education: Making of the 21st Century Warrior” foreworded by the Chief of Army Staff, released in April 2023 has been among the best seller internationally and nationally in its category in the 2023.
Gen Shivane is a keen golfer and a music lover. He has also written numerous poems and couplets. His latest book on poems, titled ‘Heartbeats of a Tankman’ was released in March 2024. His passion for adventure, sports, cycling and travelling to explore nature is part of his persona.
